State of North Carolina
In the name of God Amen
I Joseph Gilbert Senr of Jones County & State aforesaid being weak in boddy but
of perfect sound mind and memory bless be god, do therefore this 27 day of Oct
1783 make and publish this my last will and testament in manner of form following
(viz)
First – I lend unto my beloved wife Mary during her natural (sic) my negro woman
Moll, one feather bed and furniture one pewter dish, two plates, two basons, six
spoons one pak ?. one piggin, one Table, one large chest, one grey mare, three
cows & calves, one Iron pot, one skillet, one linen & wood loam (marked through)
wheels, one Loom & guns ?, one oxen, which said articles above mentioned I give
and bequeath unto my daughter Mary Gregory after the decease of my wife and not
before (the negro woman Moll excepted)
Item –I give & bequeath the labor or benefit of the labor of my negro girls Nell
& Moll and their increase to my daughter Mary Ann Gregory during her natural life
(except so much of the hire as will pay the tax of said negroes yearly) and after
her decease I give & bequeath the said negroes Nell & Moll with their increase to
be equally divided amongth all the children of my said daughter Mary Ann Gregory
which she now has or hereafter may have (except her son John Mills Tippet) for
whom provision is already made). I also give & bequeath after my wife death the
negro woman Moll & her increase which I have lent to my wife the Labor increase
of said negro woman to be disposed of in the same form & manner to my daughter
Mary Ann Gregory & her
heirs
Item – I give & bequeath unto the heirs of my son Benjamin Gilbert deceased one
shilling being all I mean to give them
Item – I give & bequeath all the residue of my estate not herein before given or
bequeath to my daughter Mary Ann Gregory except all my corn and as much pork as
will serve my wife Mary for one years provisions which I give I give (sic) to my
said wife
I hereby nominate constitute & appoint the County Court of Jones my whole and
soul Executor of this my Will & Testament & my will & desire is that the said
Court do not suffer any person to carry or convey said negroes out of the County
of Jones during the life of my said daughter Mary Ann Gregory ratifying this to
be my last will and Testament.
