Civil War Paintings

This pen and ink sketch and oil paintings were sent in by John White.

The first painting is of Ann E. Mathis, entitled: “ Remembrance.” Here she is sewing her husband’s name and a Willingham shield on a cloth as she recalls his image and thinks of his ancestry. This was an oil, done in 2006.

My CSA vets were from Tenn. and Texas as far as their service was concerned. But one of my Texas vets was born in 1841, Randolph Co., Alabama: Pvt. Amos Jackson Willingham, Co. E, 14th Texas (Dismounted) Cavalry, Ector’s Brigade, McCown’s Division, Earl Van Dorn’s Army of the West, CSA. This unit fought in Tenn., headquartered at Shelbyville, at Corinth, Miss., and at Atlanta, and Shiloh. Amos married Ann Elizabeth Mathis from Tippah Co., Miss. Returned home to live at Shady Grove, adjoining Pritchett, near Gilmer, Upshur Co., Texas. And so I honor him and the South with my membership in the Sons of Confederate Veterans, Camp #2034, Franklin, Tenn.

The second work is not the typical smoothly realistic, cool, detached, overly romanticized Currier and Ives print version so often seen in museums, galleries, and publications. It is rather a “hell-for-leather” Expressionist (meaning gut feelings have prominence) rendering of a Confederate cavalry charge, appropriately titled, “Yieeahh!” This pen and ink was done some time ago, yet still packs a wallop.

This is my most recent oil painting.
The subject matter is sufficiently generic—Christian even—to apply to any Confederate state.
