JETER TAYLOR DIES AT HOME IN JONES
RITES SET TUESDAY
Trenton, March 8 – Sheriff Jeter Pritchard Taylor, 58, of Jones County died
at the Taylor homeplace in Chinquapin Township at 6 a.m. Monday following
a heart attack.
Funeral services will be conducted from the home at 3:30 p.m. Tuesday
by Rev. J. R. Poe of Burlington and Rev. C. B. Long of Fair Bluff, both
former ministers of Sheriff Taylor who was a member of Foy’s Memorial
Methodist Church of Trenton. Burial will follow in the Taylor family
cemetery near the home.
Sheriff Taylor served as a deputy sheriff for 21 years before being appointed
by the Jones County Commissioners to fill the unexpired term of the late
J.W. Creagh in 1947. He served as a deputy under Sheriff Creagh and the
late Sheriff Joe Westbrook, who preceded Creagh in office. He had filed
as a candidate to succeed himself in the Democratic primary of May 29.
Sheriff Taylor was a member of the Woodmen of the World and state and
national sheriffs’ organizations. He was a son of the late John and Sarah
Taylor of Jones County. In addition to serving as a law enforcement official,
he operated the Taylor farm and was an active supporter of the Farm Bureau.
Survivors include the widow, Mrs. Hortense Oxley Taylor of the home; one
daughter, Mrs. Ervin Holloman of Trenton; one son, Jeter Jr., a freshman at
East Carolina College in Greenville; one granddaughter, Ann Hollomon of
Trenton; two sisters, Mrs. Neva McDaniel and Mrs. Carl Gray, both of
Trenton, and a number of nieces and nephews.
Nephews will serve as pallbearers and Jones County officials will be honorary
pallbearers. The body will remain at the home until time for the services
