Jarman, Lucy Andrews
KINSTON - Lucy Andrews Jarman, went to be with the Lord on Monday, April 13, 2009,
surrounded by her family at Magnolia Cottage.
She was born on July 6, 1918, in Jones County to William McKinley Andrews and Lillie
Burkett Andrews. She was part of a large and loving farm family. Lucy married Soloman
Jarman and had three daughters. They also farmed in Jones County before buying
Jarman's Store. Lucy proved to be a very smart businesswoman and for many years
their general store was the center of the community. It was a gathering place for local
residents to discuss events of the day, farming issues, hunt-ing and life in general. After
her husband passed away, she moved to Kinston to be near family. She was a longtime
member of Bethel Free Will Baptist Church and was active in church endeavors, Bible
studies, travel and various Senior Citizen's events.
She was pre-ceded in death by her husband, parents and a brother, Harper and a sister,
Fannie.
She is survived by her daughters, Mary Helen Howard (Alton) of Fayetteville, Joyce Marshall
of Kinston and Ann Snipes (Ronnie) of Kernersville. She has eight grandchildren, Linda
Norris of Kinston; Dianne Schumacher (Roger) of Pinehurst; James Howard of Fayetteville;
Sheri Davenport (Kent) of Trenton; Gary Mozingo (Becky) of Salisbury, Maryland; Rhonda
Thurmond (Sherman) of Greensboro; Ryan Snipes (Melinda) of Randallman and Randall
Snipes (Erin) of Tucson, Arizona. She has 20 great-grandchildren; and seven great
great-grandchildren. She is also survived by eight brothers and sisters, Harvey Andrews,
Bruce Andrews (Frances) and Grace Andrews Griffin of Trenton; Alfred Andrews and Joe
Andrews (Ann) of Kinston; Leslie Andrews (Jean) of Roxboro; Clyde Andrews (Betty Lou) of
Emerald Isle and Betty Andrews of Ayden. She has many extended family members and
friends in Lenoir and Jones Counties. Lucy will be remembered by those who knew and loved
her for her many special talents. She was an outstanding gardener with beautiful flowers in
her home and yard and a fabulous cook. All her children and grandchildren will tell you there
was no greater treat than dinner at her home. She was famous for her "little layer" chocolate
cake and it was often requested for family, church and community events. She will be
remembered fondly for her wonderful sense of style. She loved beautiful clothes and shoes
and took great pride in her appearance. She passed this on to other women in her family and
it has often been a source of humor when they were out shopping together. Most importantly,
Lucy will be remembered as a kind and loving person who had a strong devotion to her family,
her church and the Lord. Today, she is in Heaven and rejoic-ing with all those who have gone
before and safe in the arms of God. Funeral services will be held at 7 p.m. on Thursday, April
16, 2009, from Bethel Free Will Baptist Church with the Reverend Ruffin Hill and the Reverend
Archie Ratliff officiating. Interment services will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, April 17 from
Pinelawn Memorial Park.
The family will receive friends immediately following the service on Thursday evening and
other times at the home of her daughter, 3267 Whitfield Ridge, Kinston. The family thanks
the wonderful staff at Magnolia Cottage for the excellent care they provided and the
amazing way they filled her final days with dignity and compassion. Garner Funeral Home
